Montee Tayion Holland is a Marine Corps Veteran, former Pfizer exec and athlete who had aspirations of becoming a high school principal. So, how did he get into the men’s fashion business?
While overseas as a Marine, he made and designed clothing for himself. His friends, loving what he was wearing, he started making pieces for them as well. Years later, he turned his hobby into a business, and in 2003, launched Tayion and T Fusion.
Tayion is a full collection comprised of men’s fashion suits ($375 to $550 retail), dress shirts ($45 to $75 retail), neckwear ($35 to $65 retail) outerwear ($225 to $450 retail), denim ($150 to $250 retail), and accessories. His T Fusion brand has a similar aesthetic at lower prices. Prices for suiting range from $150 to $250, dress shirts from $25 to $45, and neckwear from $17 to $25.
“Everything is interchangeable, so customers can mix-and-match pieces for multiple looks. It’s like Garanimals for grown-ups,” explains Holland. “This merchandising strategy also promotes multi-purchase sales and gives customers a reason to come back to the store. I’m currently working on hang tags to show how the pieces can work together.”
And it’s clearly working. Holland was recently chosen for one of the coveted spots in Macy’s Workshop program this May. Out of nearly 3,000 applications, 15 designers were chosen for the class of 2019. The Workshop at Macy’s is described in their press release as “an exclusive retail-vendor development program designed to give select high potential minority, LGBTQ, veteran and women-owned businesses the tools to better succeed and sustain growth in the retail industry.” What’s more, Holland was approved for a $10M line of credit from MBE Capital Partners, LLC.
With all of this momentum, Holland will show Tayion and T Fusion at the upcoming edition of MAGIC MENS in Las Vegas this August 12-14th. Make sure to stop by his booth 64926 to shop their Spring/Summer 2020 Tayion and T Fusion collections.
